How to Write T in Cursive

Learn to write cursive T step by step. Follow smooth, flowing strokes to form both uppercase and lowercase letters neatly.

Lowercase Cursive T

  1. Start at the baseline. Sweep upward and slightly to the right, aiming for the top line (or just slightly below it).

  2. This is the most important part. Do not make a loop. Instead, trace back down the same line you just drew until you reach the midline.

  3. Continue the straight line down to the baseline.

  4. As you hit the baseline, curve back up and out to the right to create the connecting tail.

  5. Lift your pen. Draw a short, straight horizontal line across the vertical stem at the midline.

Quick Tip: No Loops allowed: Beginners often accidentally turn a "t" into an "l." Remember: an l has a loop (a hole in the middle), while a t is a "solid" line because you retrace your path.

Cross it Last: In cursive, you should finish the entire word before going back to cross your "t"s and dot your "i"s. This keeps your writing fluid and fast.

The "T" Height: Some calligraphers prefer the "t" to be slightly shorter than the "l" to help distinguish them. Aim for about $3/4$ of the way to the top line.

Centered Crossbar: Try to balance the crossbar so that half is on the left of the stem and half is on the right.

Uppercase Cursive T

  1. Start just below the top line. Make a small "tick" or upward flick, then sweep to the right in a gentle, flowing wave (like a flattened "S" shape). This serves as the "roof" of the letter.

  2. Lift your pen off the paper after finishing the wave.

  3. Place your pen back at the center of the wave you just drew.

  4. Pull a slightly slanted line straight down toward the baseline.

  5. As you approach the baseline, curve the stroke sharply to the left to create a rounded hook (like the bottom of a candy cane or a "J").

Quick Tip:

The "No-Touch" Rule: In many formal cursive styles, the top wave and the vertical stem do not actually touch. They sit very close to each other, but a tiny gap is common.

Don't Connect: The uppercase "T" usually does not connect to the following letter because the stroke ends in a leftward hook. Simply lift your pen and start the next letter.

"T" vs. "F": These two are nearly identical. The only difference is that an "F" has a small horizontal crossbar in the middle of the stem, while the "T" is left plain.

Keep it Balanced: Center the stem under the wave. If the stem is too far to one side, the letter will look like it’s tipping over.

Start with an upstroke to the midline, retrace down, pull straight to the baseline, add the connecting tail, and finish by crossing the stem.

Ensure the horizontal line is centered, with half on the left and half on the right of the vertical stem.

No. Write the vertical stroke continuously, then lift your pen only to draw the crossbar after completing the word.

Uppercase T begins with a top wave or flick, followed by a straight downstroke ending in a bottom hook. It usually does not connect to the next letter.

Typically, the uppercase T is not connected. The vertical stem ends in a leftward hook, so start the next letter separately.

Lowercase T is a solid vertical line with a crossbar, while L has a loop. Keep the T’s line simple and retraced for clarity.
